Jo Kirkbride is a freelance classical music writer, specialising in programme notes for concert programmes and CD booklets.

After gaining her first class degree in Music from Cambridge University, Jo went on to study for both a Masters and Doctoral degree at Durham University, focusing on the slow movements of Beethoven. Now based in Edinburgh, she combines her work as a writer with freelance project management for musicians, ensembles and music organisations.

AllegroAndanteAllegro'They are both concerti to make you sweat!' declared Mozart of his 15th and 16th piano concertos. Not simply a challenge for performer and audience, they also exemplify Mozart's own creative fervour: he wrote the works in a two month period that spawned four of the ten concertos written in the last decade of his life. His numerous amendments to the original scores also show that Mozart found their composition just as demanding as the soloist finds their performance.The concertos date from Mozart's time in Vienna, where he lived from 1781 until the end of his life. His increasing fascination with the genre parallels the development of the instrument itself, allowing Mozart to compose more ambitious works as the instrument's technological capabilities were expanded. The final seven piano concerti from his time in Vienna are the pinnacle of this achievement, rich in virtuosity and originality and far exceeding the scale of his contemporaries' works. Alongside this expansion of the genre, Mozart also raised the profile of the instrumental concerto from simply a vehicle for virtuosity to a sophisticated means of personal expression.It is quite astonishing that, alongside these immense achievements, Mozart was also in demand as a concert pianist, at one time performing 22 concerts in 38 days and declaring: 'I don't think that in this way I can possibly get out of practice!' Of course, performing as the soloist himself had its advantages: knowing his own capabilities, Mozart was able to tailor the works to suit himself, producing dazzling feats of virtuosity that few pianists at the time were capable of. Sadly, by 1789, Mozart's reception was waning, with one critic declaring: 'Mozart's music did not make much sensation among the public. It is for the connoisseur who knows how to appreciate and unravel its refinements rather than for the dilettante who... judges only the first and immediate impression.'With a wider range of musicians at his disposal in Vienna, Mozart was also able to extend the scoring of his concerti; K450 displays a new confidence in orchestration with his elaborate part-writing for wind instruments, whilst K451 even includes trumpets and drums. At times, the B flat major concerto even verges on the symphonic, with a close, integrated dialogue between orchestra and piano and a more developmental method of thematic exploration as opposed to simple restatement. Even the introduction of the concerto breaks with tradition, with short antiphonal piano exchanges between woodwind and strings paving the way for a cascade of semiquavers into the dramatic forte orchestral exposition. The delicate, lilting Andante in E flat major leads into a jaunty finale a jaunty dance in 6/8 in which the orchestra now takes a far more subsidiary role. After a several forays into distant keys, culminating in the piano's final cadenza, the piano drives the work to its firm B flat conclusion and a triumphant forte finish.© Jo Kirkbride

Piazzolla Four Seasons

ASTOR PIAZZOLLA (1921-1992) The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (1970)

Few composers can boast the cosmopolitan upbringing of Astor Piazolla, who was born in Argentina to Italian parents, but spent most of his childhood living in New York, where he learned to speak English, French, Spanish and Italian. This eclectic upbringing translated into his music, which was so unusual that a new musical genre was invented in his wake nuevo tango. While the traditional tango is usually played by a standard ensemble (or orquesta típica) comprising bandonéon, violins, piano and double bass, Piazzolla's works eventually included electric bass and guitar, synthesizer, and other distinctly non-típica instruments. He also channelled non-Argentinean elements into his compositions, such as jazz, fusion and even elements of the classical baroque. Piazzolla's years spent studying with renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger were central to his development as a composer. Writing in his autobiography, he remembered his pivotal first lesson: 'When I met her, I showed her my kilos of symphonies and sonatas. She started to read them and suddenly came out with a horrible sentence: It's very well written.... After a long while, she said: Here you are like Stravinsky, like Bartók, like Ravel, but you know what happens? I can't find Piazzolla in this. And she began to investigate my private life: what I did, what I did and did not play, if I was single, married, or living with someone, she was like an FBI agent! And I was very ashamed to tell her that I was a tango musician... She kept asking: You say that you are not pianist. What instrument do you play, then? And I didn't want to tell her that I was a bandonéon player... Finally, I confessed and she asked me to play some bars of a tango of my own. She suddenly opened her eyes, took my hand and told me: You idiot, that's Piazzolla! And I took all the music I composed, ten years of my life, and sent it to hell in two seconds.' The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires was written in the years 1967-1970, but was originally a work for Piazzolla's folk quintet, comprising bandoneón, piano, violin, electric guitar, and electric bass. Though allusions to Vivaldi's work, both in the title and in the programmatic nature of the four movements, arise from this original composition, it was not until the work was arranged for string orchestra and soloist after Piazzolla's death (by Russian composer and arranger Leonid Desyatnikov), that Piazzolla's Four Seasons came to closely shadow that of Vivaldi. As well as the textural similarities, Desyatnikov also heightened the relationship between the two by weaving into the new arrangement fragments of Vivaldi's score. While each of the four concertos that make up Vivaldi's work each comprise three individual movements, Piazzolla's piece has just one movement per season but even within this framework there is a remarkable breadth of variety. In Spring, for example, a lively, even frenetic, syncopated fugue frames the movement, while at its centre is a more languorous, sleepy interlude. While Piazzolla's Winter is somewhat sly and melancholic, with solo violin and cello winding around each other like the tango dancers they are depicting, Desyatnikov cannot resist inserting a tiny fragment of Vivaldi's Summer, which lifts the mood once more and sends shafts of sunlight to brighten the rather menacing winter.© Jo Kirkbride

Britten Lachrymae

BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913-1976) Lachrymae for viola and orchestra, Op. 48a (1950, arr. 1976)

In the final years of his life, Britten suffered increasingly from ill health, and so too from ill spirits. He had been diagnosed with a heart problem in his youth (Britten called it a wonky heart), but although it had prevented him taking part in some sports while at school, he was able to lead an almost completely normal life thereafter and rarely suffered any discomfort from his condition. During a check-up in 1972, however, his doctor noticed some signs of cardiac deterioration and it was soon clear that he would need heart surgery sooner rather than later. Britten, meanwhile, had other priorities: he still had Death in Venice to complete and was not too keen on interrupting his work.The operation took place the following April, but it was clear even then that although they had saved Britten from certain heart failure, his heart was unlikely to make a successful recovery. The operation was also complicated by a small stroke which led Britten to lose some co-ordination in his right hand a devastating blow for a composer and pianist. The operation and subsequent problems deeply affected Britten and made him lose confidence in his compositional authority but, after several months without writing, his creative flow returned and although he was not back to his former self, he was able to pursue composing with new vigour.Happily, Britten continued composing until the very end of his life, and just six months before he died he accepted the honour of being made a Life Peer, having refused for many years to accept any personal accolades. It seems fitting that his final original composition was a new arrangement of his mournful elegy for viola, Lachrymae (which literally means tears). The new orchestration was written on a promise to his friend and colleague, Cecil Aronowitz, with the original keyboard part re-written for chamber orchestra. The work is subtitled Reflections on a song of John Dowland and explores Dowland's song If my complaints could compassions move through ten short variations. The poem is an impassioned journey through themes of love and death, with the violist taking the role of poet in Britten's own transformation of the original. In the sixth variation, Britten also quotes Dowland's own Lachrimae (or Flow my tears), a sombre song that tells of lost hope, grief and eternal mourning.© Jo Kirkbride
